The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Steve Kazee
Nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, Once
"I feel amazing right now. I feel completely out of my own body, I’m speechless and thrilled for our show. I certainly didn't expect to be recognized in this way and to see my name next to people like Norm Lewis and Danny Burstein, who I've seen in so many shows, and Ron [Raines] and Jeremy [Jordan]. It’s just crazy. I don't know who first called, but my phone just started exploding around 8:35. I'm a little superstitious so I wasn't watching, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't know this morning was the nominations! There's something special about the Tony Awards and feeling like you're being welcomed into a family and being recognized by your peers. It's humbling but also thrilling and bittersweet. Having just recently lost my mother, this is a day that's hard to celebrate too much without missing her. But she’s right here, she knows, and I think she knew before she passed away that this was a special show. She told me she had a feeling that things were going to go OK. It's my first awards season ever so I'm just going to try to take it all in, and I'll be excited for whatever happens. When you look at all of the categories, they're chock full of amazing performances. I’ll forever be part of the class of 2012 Tony nominees, and that's a pretty amazing class."
